About the Artist
Nicki Young
Artist
I have lived on the Kapiti coast with my family for 18 years and worked as a teacher and art therapist at Te Ra Waldorf School for most of that time. I have stopped teaching now and I am working full time on my art. I sell my work on the Kapiti Coast, under my label; White Feather Studio.
Most of the art I create is a combination of observations from nature, and images from my imagination.
Currently I am working a lot with printmaking and collage, with each new theme flowing directly from the colours. The anticipation of what will spring from this blend of ideas, as well as the ever-new colour journey, is what leads me to be occupied in my studio each morning before dawn. I use many different mediums including print making, collage, pencil drawing, pastel, driftwood art pieces, watercolour and acrylic painting. I am particularly excited about my range of greeting cards, (printed by Precise Print in Paraparaumu) and about my newly developed website.
My process
Why collage?
I am not sure how that happened, but I have found that the printing/collage technique has brought a whole new aspect to my art. The paper I colour with the mono-printing starts me off on a new journey each time, leading me through the colours and patterns achieved into a new theme. I do not draw anything first – the scissors do all the work!
I have made cards for my family, friends and work colleagues all my life and really enjoy the process. But the dream of having a little Greeting Card business became a reality in 2021 when Covid was very much on everybody’s mind. I wanted to create images that would make people smile; to bring back a lightness and innocence, and appreciation of the miracles of nature that are all around us. Curious Chick arrived, followed by the Carnival Series.
